Some application examples
• Flat and Sloped Roof Waterproofing
- Aquaflex Roof 77 is highly suitable for waterproofing both flat and slightly sloped roofs. It forms a seamless membrane that adapts well to the movement of the surface and withstands temperature fluctuations.
- Ideal for concrete, bituminous membranes, and even pre-existing waterproofing layers that need repair.
• Protection of Roof Terraces and Balconies
- It can be applied over balconies or terraces that are subject to light foot traffic, creating a water-tight surface that protects underlying structures from moisture.
- Its UV resistance makes it suitable for exposed applications, ensuring durability even in intense sunlight.
• Waterproofing Metal Roofs and Gutters
- Aquaflex Roof 77 can adhere well to metallic surfaces like roofs, gutters, and flashings, providing protection against rust and water infiltration.
- Its elasticity allows it to accommodate the expansion and contraction typical of metal surfaces without cracking.
• Sealing and Waterproofing Parapets
- It’s often used to waterproof parapets or walls on rooftops, which are vulnerable to water accumulation and can lead to leakage into the building if not properly protected.
- The coating also acts as a protective layer against environmental pollutants that can degrade the masonry over time.
• Repairing and Renewing Old Waterproofing Layers
- Aquaflex Roof 77 can be applied over older waterproofing layers, including bitumen, to refresh and extend the lifespan of the waterproofing without needing to remove existing layers.
- This makes it a cost-effective choice for repair work on aging roofs that are otherwise structurally sound.
• Waterproofing Green Roofs
- Suitable for green roof installations, Aquaflex Roof 77 creates a barrier that prevents moisture from seeping into the underlying roof while allowing the layer to support plants and soil above it.
- Its root-resistant properties are an added advantage for such applications.
• Waterproofing Over Insulated Roof Systems
- Aquaflex Roof 77 can be applied over insulated roof systems, creating a protective seal that helps keep water out of insulation materials, which can otherwise degrade when exposed to moisture.
- This helps maintain the roof’s thermal efficiency by protecting insulation layers.
Recommendations
• Do Not Apply on Wet Surfaces: Make sure the surface is completely dry. Moisture can affect adhesion and the curing process, leading to poor performance.
• Do Not Apply in Extreme Temperatures: Avoid application in temperatures below 5°C (41°F) or above 35°C (95°F). Extreme temperatures can hinder the curing process and reduce effectiveness.
• Do Not Use Over Oil or Grease: Ensure that the application surface is free from oil, grease, or any contaminants that could interfere with adhesion.
• Do Not Apply Without Priming Porous Surfaces: On highly absorbent or porous surfaces, use a suitable primer before applying Aquaflex Roof 77 to enhance adhesion and waterproofing performance.
• Do Not Ignore Surface Preparation: Properly clean and prepare the substrate by removing dust, debris, and loose materials. Inadequate preparation may result in poor adhesion and leaks.
• Do Not Apply Too Thickly in a Single Coat: Applying a thick layer at once can lead to improper curing. Follow the recommended thickness, typically in two or more coats, to ensure even coverage and curing.
• Do Not Use on Surfaces Exposed to Negative Hydrostatic Pressure: Aquaflex Roof 77 is intended for surfaces with positive hydrostatic pressure. Using it on surfaces where water pressure may push inward can compromise the membrane.
• Do Not Allow Standing Water During Curing: Protect the area from rain or standing water until the product has fully cured to avoid dilution or washing away of the membrane.
• Do Not Ignore the Manufacturer’s Recommendations: Always refer to the technical data sheet (TDS) provided by Mapei for best practices, recommended application techniques, and limitations specific to Aquaflex Roof 77.
• Do Not Use In Areas with Continuous Heavy Foot Traffic: Aquaflex Roof 77 is not designed for heavy-duty applications, such as walkways or areas with high foot traffic. Use a more robust coating if this is needed.
