Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板) is a Japanese woodworking preservation technique, that dates back to the 18th century. The wood is burned, and this preserves the wood by making it resistant to sunlight, water, and fire. The process also brings out the wood grains texture in a way other finishes cannot.
