Some application examples
• Waterproofing Under Ceramic Tile and Stone
- Application: Mapei Planiseal 123 can be applied to subfloors before installing ceramic tiles, porcelain, or stone. It prevents moisture from reaching the surface, which is essential for installations in areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and swimming pools.
- Benefits: Provides a barrier against water penetration and prevents potential damage from moisture, while ensuring better adhesion of tiles.
• Shower and Wet Area Installations
- Application: Planiseal 123 is ideal for showers and other wet areas where water exposure is significant. The product is used as a waterproofing layer under tiles, stone, or other surface finishes.
- Benefits: It forms a durable, flexible membrane that resists the damage typically caused by constant water contact.
• Balcony and Terrace Decks
- Application: Planiseal 123 is often used on exterior terraces or balcony decks to protect the underlying substrate from moisture infiltration and freeze-thaw cycles, which can cause cracking and deterioration.
- Benefits: The membrane helps in preserving the structural integrity of the deck while ensuring proper drainage of water.
• Basements and Below-Grade Areas
- Application: The product can be used in basements or other below-grade applications to prevent water penetration through the foundation walls or floors.
- Benefits: It offers strong resistance to water pressure, ensuring dry conditions in spaces below ground.
• Crack Isolation on Floors
- Application: Planiseal 123 is applied as a crack-isolation membrane over existing concrete floors, helping to prevent cracks from transferring through the floor finish, especially when installing ceramic tiles or stone.
- Benefits: It helps to maintain the integrity of the finish by accommodating minor movements in the substrate, thus reducing the risk of tile or stone cracking.
• Protection in High-Humidity Areas
- Application: In areas like spas, saunas, or steam rooms, where high humidity is prevalent, Planiseal 123 can be used to create a protective layer beneath finishes that need to withstand constant moisture exposure.
- Benefits: The membrane serves as a long-term barrier to moisture damage in high-humidity conditions.
• Underlayment for Heated Floors
- Application: When installing radiant heating systems, Planiseal 123 can act as an underlayment to ensure a moisture-free, stable surface for the heating system and finish materials.
- Benefits: Helps ensure optimal performance of the heating system and prevents damage from water vapor.
Recommendations
• Do Not Apply Planiseal 123 on Surfaces That Are Not Clean or Dry: Ensure the surface is free from dirt, oil, grease, dust, or any other contaminants before application. Do not apply on wet or moist surfaces unless specified by the manufacturer.
• Do Not Use Planiseal 123 in Areas Exposed to Constantly High Water Pressure: While Planiseal 123 provides excellent waterproofing, it is not intended for applications where there is constant high water pressure. For areas like swimming pools or high-water-pressure zones, consider more specialized products.
• Do Not Apply Planiseal 123 Below Recommended Temperature: Do not apply the product if the ambient temperature is below 41°F (5°C) or above 95°F (35°C), as this can affect its curing and performance.
• Do Not Skip Planiseal 123 Proper Curing Time: Avoid walking or placing heavy objects on the membrane until it has fully cured. Skipping this step can compromise its waterproofing abilities.
• Do Not Over-thin the Planiseal 123: Planiseal 123 is designed to be applied without over-thinning. Adding excessive water or other solvents can weaken its membrane-forming properties.
• Do Not Apply Planiseal 123 on Non-Suitable Substrates: Avoid using Planiseal 123 on substrates like gypsum-based surfaces, drywall, or any surfaces that are not compatible with a waterproofing membrane.
• Do Not Apply Planiseal 123 in Freezing Conditions: Do not use in conditions where the temperature is expected to fall below freezing during or after application, as it can interfere with proper curing and bonding.
• Do Not Apply Planiseal 123 Over Wet or Unstable Surfaces: Avoid applying the product over surfaces that are not structurally sound or are prone to movement, as this may affect the membrane’s integrity.
